UHV-ERDA Investigations on Ion Induced Desorption

چکیده
In heavy ion accelerators the beam line vacuum is effected by lost ions impinging on the beam pipe. Due to ion induced desorption gas is released from the walls into the vacuum. This vacuum degeneration effects the ion beam life time and is a serious luminosity limitation for a heavy ion synchrotron like SIS18. Here we report on a new approach to understand the physics of the ion induced desorption using ion beam analysis. The technique is briefly introduced and first results with a silicon target are presented, showing a clear correlation between the desorption yield and the material constitution.

Desorption Yield Measurements of Copper Characterized using UHV-ERDA
Ion-induced desorption is a serious luminosity limitation for high current and low charge state heavy ion accelerators [1]. In order to find low desorbing materials for the loss regions of SIS18 a dedicated experimental program was started measuring desorption yields of different materials, which are in-situ well characterized using UHV Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis (ERDA). Two targets, wit...
متن کاملR&d Vacuum Issues of the Future Gsi Accelerator Facilities
The new GSI accelerator facilities (FAIR project) are planned to deliver heavy ion beams of increased energy and highest intensity [1]. Whereas the energy is planned to be increased roughly by a factor of 30, the ion beam intensities are planned to be enlarged by three orders of magnitude. To achieve highest beam intensities, medium charged heavy ions (e.g. U) are accelerated. Since the ionizat...
متن کاملInvestigation on new Coatings and an in-situ Bake-Out for the SIS18 Beam Loss Collimators
For an optimal functionality and a high durability of the planned SIS18 beam loss collimators a low ion-induced desorption yield of the collimator material is required. Gold coated copper was found to be the material of choice: copper has a high thermal conductivity, a high specific heat and can be produced with high purity for reasonable prizes. The gold layer prevents the copper from oxidatio...
متن کاملIon Field Emission from Micron-sized Carbon Dust Grains
Ion field emission from dust grains was studied using several glassy carbon grains of different radii from 1.64 to 2.97 μm as dust samples. Each grain was stored in a quadrupole trap under UHV conditions for a long time (days) and charged by argon ions to a high surface potential. When the ion gun was switched off the charged grain started to discharge spontaneously. We found out that the disch...
